Olivine Fabrics in the Oceanic Lithosphere Constrained by Pn Azimuthal Anisotropy

چکیده

We constrain olivine fabrics in the oceanic lithosphere using active and passive seismic observations of Pn azimuthal anisotropy. first analyze active-source data derived from a broadband ocean bottom seismometer array that was deployed Northwestern Pacific. infer dependence velocity, including 2ϕ 4ϕ terms sinusoidal functions, where ϕ is back azimuth. observe skewed with large peak-to-peak amplitude about 12%. Similar features are observed an independent dataset teleseismic waves. direction crystallographic axes to explain identify A-type slightly dipping a-axis tilting b-axis being compatible our observations. In contrast, we find D-type any cannot Secondary deformation recrystallization older Pacific may be responsible for this strong complex anisotropy study region.

Azimuthal seismic anisotropy constrains net rotation of the lithosphere

[1] Net rotation (NR) of the lithosphere is found in hot spot reference frames, important for tectonics and plume models, but difficult to constrain. Using mantle flow and crystallographic texture modeling, I show that NRs lead to mantle shearing which is recorded in azimuthal seismic anisotropy. The NR amplitude in some hot spot models is so large that it degrades the model fit to anisotropy s...

Thermal structure, radial anisotropy, and dynamics of oceanic boundary layers

Defining the oceanic lithosphere as a thermal boundary layer allows to explain, to first order, age-dependent bathymetry and isotropic wave speeds. In contrast, SS precursors and receiver functions suggest a subhorizontal interface within this layer, on top of a radially anisotropic zone. Comparing a suite of geodynamic scenarios against surface wave dispersion data and seismic discontinuities,...
